What is Story Points ?

Story points are units of measurement that is useful to estimate the amount of effort required to complete a task in the product backlog.

The team assigns story points based on the work’s complexity, amount, and uncertainty.

How do we assign story points ?

Here’s a simplified way to understand and assign story points.

Imagine you and your friends are planning to bake a cake, you have the recipe list all ingredients and the steps to follow.

However, you’re not sure how long it will take to complete all the steps, since you’ve never baked a cake before. To help with this, you can use story
points to estimate how much effort each step will take

You might give mixing the all dry ingredients a story point of 1 because it’s a simple and quick step, but mixing the batter well, using method like cut and fold, might be a bit harder, so you might give that a story point of 3, increasing the story point estimate on the basis of difficulty and time required. Greasing the pan can have a story point of 1 and so on.

This is a process to compare tasks on the basis of effort and time required to complete them.

Once you have estimated the story points for each step, you can add them up to get a total.

This will help you plan how much time you will need to complete the whole recipe, and you can also use it to divide the work evenly among your friends.

In conclusion,
Story points are a way to estimate how much effort a task or project will take, even if you’re not sure exactly how long it will take. It helps you plan and manage your time better.
